How to Clean Your Dog's Paws After Snow, Salt and Mud

Winter walks are great for dogs, but they bring home snow, slush, mud and, in many towns, de-icing salt. That mix can dry out paw pads, get stuck between toes, and end up on your floors and couch. The good news: a short routine after each walk takes care of most of it.

Why winter paws need extra attention

  • De-icing salt and chemicals can irritate paw pads, and dogs often lick their paws afterward.
  • Snowballs form in the fur between toes and pads, which can be uncomfortable and make walking slippery.
  • Cold, dry air can leave pads dry or cracked.
  • Mud and slush travel straight from the yard to your floors.

A simple 2-minute routine after every walk

  1. Stop at the door. Keep a towel and your cleaning tools right by the entrance so you clean paws before your dog runs inside.
  2. Rinse each paw with lukewarm water. Plain water is enough for most walks. A paw cleaner cup makes this quick: fill it with water, dip one paw at a time, and gently twist so the soft bristles loosen dirt and salt.
  3. Check between the toes. Gently spread the toes and remove any ice, small stones or salt crystals.
  4. Dry thoroughly. Pat each paw dry with a towel, including between the toes. Damp fur in the cold can lead to more snowballs on the next walk.
  5. Look at the pads. A quick glance helps you notice dryness, cracks or small cuts early.

Keep the fur between the pads short

Long fur between paw pads collects snow and ice. Trimming it flush with the pads reduces snowballs and helps your dog grip on slick floors. A small, quiet trimmer designed for paws makes this easier, especially for nervous pets. Go slowly, use good light, and stop if your dog gets stressed.

When to call your vet

This routine is for everyday cleaning. If you notice bleeding, deep cracks, swelling, limping, or your dog keeps licking or chewing one paw, check with your veterinarian.
